Early literacy changes the course of a child’s life — and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is one of the most effective, lowest-cost ways to deliver it. This is a thank-you to Nova Scotia’s municipalities, community partners and the House of Assembly for the funding already in place — and a request to grow it by 25%, so more children under five receive a free, age-appropriate book every month, at no cost to families.

Nova Scotia already funds part of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. This proposal thanks the local partners who run the program today — municipalities, libraries, and community organizations — and the House of Assembly of Nova Scotia for that investment, and asks the House of Assembly to increase the current provincial appropriation by 25%, renewed annually, so that more children under five receive a free book every month on the way to every child. Early literacy is one of the highest-return investments Nova Scotia can make — we need more of it, and a 25% step is a measured way to get there.
